5 Steps Toward Healthier Kidneys

Your kidneys are very important to your everyday function. They work as a filter for waste products, excess water, and other impurities from your blood.

With this in mind, it’s important that you care for your kidneys. In this article, we listed some quick steps to better kidney health.

1. Stay active.

One advantage of keeping active is that it can lower your chances of acquiring chronic kidney disease. It can also help lower your blood pressure and help keep your heart healthy, which are both great for preventing kidney damage.

There are so many great exercises you can choose from. Pick one that you actually enjoy doing so you’ll be more consistent.

One option is to frequent  studios for dance lessons, try swimming at community centers and recreation centers, or hit the gyms with a personal trainer who can help you with your goals.

You can also try yoga and pilates if that’s more your cup of tea.

Aside from these, you can also work out at home. You can do this by getting equipment from retailers in Calgary.

2. Keep your blood sugar under control.

If you have diabetes, you are at risk of kidney damage in the long run. This is because your cells can’t really use glucose in your blood, giving your kidneys a hard time in filtering blood.

Years of this can cause extreme damage. So make sure to consult with your doctor, drink more water, and control your portions.

3. Eat a healthy diet.

It’s important to watch what you eat in order to take better care of your kidneys. If you’re overweight you may be at risk for health conditions that can damage the kidneys.

So make sure to keep a healthy and balanced diet that’s low on sodium and other kidney-damaging food. Eat fresh ingredients like whole grains, fish, fruits, and vegetables.

4. Drink a lot of water.

Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Consistent water intake is really good for your kidneys because it clears sodium and toxins from your kidneys.

5. Be conscious of your intake of OTC pills such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

If you regularly take over-the-counter medication for pain, you might be causing irreversible kidney damage. If you deal with chronic pain, headaches, or other conditions, it might be best to consult your doctor for treatments that are safe for your kidneys.
