How We Chose the Best Personal Trainers in Calgary
1. 12 Fitness
Qualifications | 5/5 |
Expertise | 5/5 |
Style of training | 5/5 |
Personality | 4/5 |
Pricing | 3/5 |
12 Fitness, led by their coach Mitch, has been in the fitness industry for over 19 years, specializing in a variety of fields. One of their most sought-after services, of course, is personal training.
Mitch is known for bringing an athlete’s mentality to the gym and his coaching style to his clients. In this regard, we highly recommend them if you truly want a more sports immersive training experience.
Many of their clients, ourselves counted, were impressed by the structure of their training. This is because each stage is centered on various principles that target specific workout points.
They usually structure it around five main lifting principles: push, pull, hinge, squat, and core. So if you hire them as your trainer, be prepared for a lot of lifting.
However, Mitch always makes sure to provide workouts that are constantly varied. So, every time a client shows up, they will be put through a new fitness test.
Of course, this includes the constant alteration of workout intensity and stimulus. After all, these minor changes introduce the body to new techniques, ensuring higher chances of satisfactory results.
Additionally, we appreciate how they incorporate fun games and challenges into each week’s sessions, which is the type of personality we seek. We understand how difficult training can be at times, and we applaud their efforts to make their clients as comfortable as possible.
This fitness center also provides online training, which is very convenient for many people who are unable to go to the gym To make things easier, 12 Fitness offers a free consultation, though this must be an in-person appointment.
In our opinion, the only weakness of 12 Fitness is that it is only run by one trainer, which can affect their availability. But the good thing is that they still manage to provide full session attention to each of their clients regardless of how booked they are.
Pros
- Over 18 years in the industry
- Certified through CanFit PRO as a personal trainer
- Lifting-centered training structure
- Workouts are constantly varied
- Often incorporates fun games and challenges on workouts
- Online training available
- Free consultations
Cons
- Free consultation is an in-person appointment only
- Run by only one trainer
Knowledgeable, always motivated
Mitch is an amazing trainer. He has helped me make major improvements in my own training so far in a short amount of time. He is very knowledgeable and will always challenge you to help you reach your goals. Every workout is different and he is always motivated to bring the best out of you. I highly recommend him. – Nihal Chhina
So positive, customizes everything
Wow! Mitch! If you’re at all serious about getting your health and fitness on track, look no further! Mitch is incredible! Customizes everything he does to your individual needs and fitness level. He’s so positive and constantly providing helpful feedback throughout the process. – Good Life

Here are some reviews from their clients:
JoJo’s workouts, whether live-streamed, or on demand, kept me motivated but are often one of the best parts of my day! She has fantastic variety of workouts, awesome playlists, and is constantly challenging us with new movements. The on demand has provided the flexibility I need & keeps me engaged and pushing myself as though I was doing a live class with her.
Her live classes keep me motivated to workout and I’m always surprised at how much I sweat even after a 30 minute workout. I love how there’s a variety of classes to choose from and in those classes, she’s always changing it up and keeping me challenged. Her enthusiastic energy is contagious and really helps keep me moving. I always seem to have a better day when I do one of her classes.

Expertise | 5/5 |
Style of training | 4/5 |
Personality | 5/5 |
Pricing | 4/5 |
If your fitness goal is to develop body and muscular strength (not just a temporary ’’beach body”), Studio Per Noi is a good start. They’re a true strength and conditioning coach, ideal for long-term muscular gains.
To assess their coaching methods, we reached out to their past clients who praised them for hands-on support. Beyond this, we appreciate that they encourage clients to get past their comfort zones and strive for better.
Even so, some clients said that training under them is not an easy task, as they can be quite forceful at times. However, many people see it as a benefit to grow stronger, since personal training is indeed a laborious journey.
In our opinion, a combination of both support and disciplined techniques does the job best. In fact, their most recent client stories show satisfactory before-and-after results (of course, your individual effort is still a major factor.
Their place is suitable for personal training as we expected but it’s the vibe that we liked best. The overall atmosphere of Studio Per Noi is not like that of a typical gym (no mirrors, no crowds), but rather that of a more intimate training studio.
Perhaps the only inconvenient thing about them is that they don’t offer online training, which most personal trainers do nowadays.
However, it’s encouraging that many of their clients preferred doing business with them in person. Plus, it’s actually more of their specialty – you may want to deal with other coaches if you prefer remote training.
Lastly, pricing varies depending on the program, and it is only discussed during the complimentary consultation session. In this way, you’ll get a first-hand view of your program and how much you’ll pay as a whole.

If remote coaching is more of your thing, there is no better option than In Home Personal Trainer. Their Calgary base is staffed entirely by certified personal trainers who have all undergone actual workout training.
First things first, we want to recognize their track record, which demonstrates that they have completed over 20,000 (and counting) training sessions. This is quite impressive given that they only have about 75 trainers nationwide.
What makes their training more convenient are the coaching options they provide. Not only do they offer online personal training, but their trainers can also come to the client’s homes for a more private experience.
Their exercise plans are excellent for losing body fat, increasing mobility, and strengthening – all of which are proven based on past client records. They also have additional programs that can be incorporated for a more sustainable result.
In line with that, In Home Personal Trainer also provides full fitness assessments and nutrition counseling if their clients wish to proceed. So, in addition to training, clients can expect to receive more fitness support from them.

7. Optimum Health and Fitness
Qualifications | 4/5 |
Expertise | 5/5 |
Style of training | 5/5 |
Personality | 4/5 |
Pricing | 4/5 |
Optimum Health & Fitness specializes in sports, so we strongly recommend them if you have sports-specific goals. Although as a whole, they’re an excellent training ground too for workout-intensive coaching.
For starters, they have experience working with many competitive athletes from various sports such as football/soccer, swimming, MMA, rugby, and many others. This demonstrates a high level of expertise in their sports-oriented training.
When it comes to training, their experience and resources both contribute to their well-paced plans. They tailor each training session to the athlete’s chosen sport, while also including strength and conditioning exercises.
This, we believe, is truly effective for increasing gains in components such as speed, strength, mobility, and agility. We’d let the results speak for themselves as past clients already attest to their effective coaching methods.
Still, all of this can be overwhelming, which is why we like that they personalize the intensity levels based on the client’s abilities. Sometimes trainers tend to be pushy and harsh with training so this is a great point to consider.
As an endnote, people who contact them for sports enrichment training will also receive a well-rounded package that includes personal training, sports nutrition and education, and a before and after evaluation.
Pros
- Sports-centric personal training
- Open since 1999
- Well-paced plans and well-rounded package
- Personalized intensity levels
- Diverse experience in various sports
- Athlete-driven programs
Cons
- Limited options beyond sports-related programs

Gymgoers love Jensen Fitness as they don’t stray too far away from the typical gym layout. Their facility boasts 3,000 square feet of fitness space packed with workout equipment both indoors and outdoors.
The center offers a wide range of fitness programs, covering both long-term and short-term fitness goals. We like how flexible the options are, plus they’re able to customize training plans too for more sustainable results.
Speaking of personalization, they take in your goals, body composition, and exercise experience to create a customized plan. Now, this is nothing revolutionary per se, but it taps into the most important areas which we like.
Another factor we considered is the consultation process, which far exceeded our expectations. Before beginning a workout plan, they discuss everything with the client, from their current lifestyle to nutrition and eating habits, and even their training history.
Clients can also choose between training in a luxury private facility and virtual personal training. Unfortunately, the latter received mixed reviews, with praise for being as effective as the in-person and criticism for technical issues.

Strong foundation, patient coaching
I trained with Nick for about a year, making considerable gains in my strength, power, speed, and conditioning as a roller derby athlete. When I started training, I knew next to nothing about lifting or what my regular workout routine was lacking. Nick gave me a strong foundation adjusted to my knowledge level and then built on that. He’s a patient coach but also knows how to crack the whip and push his athletes just the right amount beyond their comfort zone to get results. I super appreciate that he has an academic backing to his training approach; that’s not something you get with many other trainers. – Zoey Duncan

There is no question that Paul is one of the best in the biz! You can see his passion! He’s incredibly knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition. The positive energy he brings to your day and workouts is simply amazing. He always treats you like family and pushes you to be the best version of yourself and for that, we will always be grateful! – Good Life
Knows what they’re doing
Paul is seriously the BEST! In a few short months I’ve been able to go down more than 10-15lbs + of sustained weight loss, and I feel great! I am down to a weight already, that I’ve only associated in my 20s! Clothes are fitting better and I’m building muscle in areas I didn’t even know I could build. I can’t wait to see what the next few months looks like and what I’ll be capable of next. Paul completely knows what he’s doing and, paces you no matter where you’re at – he’s also hilarious and super fun! I always look forward to my workouts with him – absolutely recommend him!!! :):). – Alisha Rawji

Qualifications | 3/5 |
Expertise | 5/5 |
Style of training | 4/5 |
Personality | 4/5 |
Pricing | 4/5 |
Evolved Health is a good choice if you like strength training but only have a few minutes to spare for a week. We think it’s a nice option for busy working adults and those that find personal training difficult to maintain.
What differentiates them from their competitors is that they aren’t as intense and pushy – their training is more of a safe, low-impact form of exercise. In fact, you only have to train for 15 minutes about once or twice a week.
So, if you aren’t currently exercising or simply don’t enjoy working out, we see Evolved Health as your safest and most effective option.
To walk you through their process, they offer complimentary one-on-one consultations. This isn’t the only good news; it’s also convenient, as it can be done virtually or in person, depending on what works best for the client.
After the consultation, clients are free to choose their membership plans based on their goals, lifestyle, and budget. We love programs that don’t tie their clients to steep flat-rate pricing so this is definitely a plus.
Now, despite the fact that they provide slow-paced exercise for their clients, we were surprised to see the quick results as early as the first workout. Though visible external results still vary depending on the clients’ conditions, it’s still worth noting.
All in all, Evolved Health is a promising partner for short bursts of strength training that gives clients fast results. With all this said, their welcoming environment is almost just simply a bonus.
Pros
- Specializes in strength training
- Offers safe, low-impact form of exercise
- Quick visible results
- Complimentary one-on-one consultation
- Short training sessions per week
- Provides recommendations based on the client’s goals, budget, and lifestyle
Cons

Short but tough enough workout
My wife and I joined Evolved in October last year and have loved it. The 15 minute workout is tough enough to get me in shape, but short enough that I don’t skip workouts when I am busy. We have had great trainers – thanks Layton, Ashley and Kaylee!! I am in my 50’s and am in better shape now that I have been in a long long time. With the help of a good diet and some cardio I have been able to drop almost 100 pounds. – Alex Gall
Safe, supported training
Evolved Strength takes the guesswork out of getting stronger. I’ve always felt intimidated or overwhelmed at gyms, but Evolved Strength’s personalized, one-on-one workouts make me feel safe and supported. It’s easy to fit the short workout into my busy schedule, and I know it’s effective because my muscles are always absolutely exhausted after. I’ve been training with Jill for 4 months and her positive encouragement gets me through the toughest – Dana P

Lucy Dunne of Dunnebells is perhaps one of many names you’ll hear when it comes to online personal training. Her reputation speaks for itself, as she has been assisting women in their quest for health and wellness for many years.
They’re best known for their 8-week weight loss program, claiming drastic results in a short time. This is probably too ambitious for some, even for us, although their track record shows that clients did experience vast changes.
On the rough side, the program is pricey (well, it’s no secret that things like this really cost a lot). Fortunately, they have a free 7-day trial, which is enough time to help clients decide if they want to commit to their offer.
Now, what makes us think they’re worthwhile is seeing the visible results in as early as eight weeks, confirming that their plan is truly effective. Still, there were some who saw results later than the timeline – normal but understandably frustrating for others,
Dunnebells also serve those who don’t have a fitness goal but simply want to access their workouts without all the bells and whistles. This is accomplished through an online membership with them via Thrive.
Finally, this women-focused trainer provides a space that’s more than just for losing weight. It’s about finding a community of women who actively support one another in their efforts to be the best versions of themselves.
Pros
- Seven years of experience as an online personal trainer
- Provides a custom program for weight loss
- Free 7-day trial
- Offers online membership to access workouts
- Available anytime, anywhere
- Provides a strong community for women clients
- Solid weight loss timeless
- Relatively fast results in a short time
Cons
- Can be pricey
Happy to help, extremely knowledgeable
8 weeks in, and I’m a completely different person than when I started. With Lucy’s help, I have been able to transform my mindset to something polar opposite to where I began. Lucy is amazing at what she does. I reached out not really knowing what to expect and I did have hesitancies. Lucy eased me into everything, helping me grow into the human I am today. I now want to engage, get active, and am also thinking about food as fuel which is massive. I can’t recommend Lucy enough if you’re looking to get on the right track when it comes to health and well being. She is caring, kind, thoughtful, extremely knowledgeable and happy to help. Lucy is an expert in this field and I can’t wait to continue on with her to work towards an even better version of myself. – Byron & Co.
Holistic program
The Dunnebells 8 week program is amazing, better than I had expected. The app works well, the nutrition (macro based) and workouts that Lucy creates are customized and really work well. The whole program is holistic and based on neuroscience, science, and mental and physical wellness. It’s a great program to reset habits, refocus on you, and get motivation and accountability nudges on a daily basis. – Connie Berkshire
17. Method Fitness

Personality | 3/5 |
Pricing | 3/5 |
Method Fitness provides fitness enthusiasts with all levels with personalized, individual training and ongoing support. They have training plans whether you’re an elite athlete, need post-injury rehabilitation, or are brand new to working out.
Every client receives their own space, with no equipment sharing – ideal if you hate working out in groups. This ensures a one-of-a-kind workout experience that includes their own training and individualized fitness plan.
This kind of approach is great if you need individual attention, which is what most people look for in a personal trainer. However, it is obviously not for you if you thrive in group support to achieve your goals.
Another thing we like is their boutique setting, as they accommodate clients well and make them feel at ease. They can also deal with various types of clients, whether you’ve been physically active before or not.
Long-term Method Fitness clients can also expect a new customized program after they are re-assessed every 6 to 8 weeks. We like this approach because we know people can hit a plateau in training – a new plan helps curb that.
All things said, the only issue is that they frequently overlook other aspects of their client’s fitness goals, causing them to be inconsistent at times. We recommend really breaking down your goals with them so you can maximize the outcomes.
Pros
- Provides personal training to fitness enthusiasts of all levels
- No equipment sharing
- Clients receive their own space
- New customized program after 6 to 8 weeks
- Individualized fitness plans
- Complimentary discovery session
Cons
- May overlook other aspects of their clients’ fitness goal
- No online training

One On One Personal Fitness Instruction Inc. has been operating for more than 30 years. Their experience is a big advantage in this regard – and even this trainer is herself proof of long-lasting results.
One On One nutritionally educates clients to help them stay fit by finding the right diet that their body requires. This, along with their approach of doing one workout at a time, appears to help their clients progress toward their goals.
As you may know, we believe that personality is an important factor among personal trainers, and they did not disappoint. We find them to be super supportive and many past clients attested to our comments as well.
Now, what sets them apart is the fact that they make their service accessible, even to those who did not personally sign up for it. They have videos and tutorials available on their website, which is totally free, by the way.
On the other hand, what they lack (compared to most personal trainers today) is virtual training. Aside from the online resources available to the general public, One On One Personal Fitness appears to only provide in-person training.
Nonetheless, we don’t consider it a disadvantage – just a missing factor. Overall, clients can still rely on them for excellent workouts and proper diets led by trainers who ensure everything is done correctly.
Pros
- Over 30 years of experience
- One workout at a time approach
- Assists in dietary plans
- Supportive and bright personality

High performing team
I have been a client for almost 20 years, and give Sandra, Codrut, and the entire team a resounding thumbs up! At 70, I can do everything I could in my 30s. I ski, hike, swim, kayak, and travel extensively to remote natural areas. One on One helped make and keep me fit, they nutritionally educated me, and supported me in my goals. This is a very high performing team who care about their clients. – William MacLachlan
Individualized attention, highly motivates
I’ve been a satisfied client of One on One for many years. Sandra and her trainers give truly individualized attention to clients and will work with you toward your fitness and health goals. I’ve found it highly motivating to have my weekly training session with Danny, an excellent trainer who designs workouts with my fitness goals in mind (half marathon training, racquet sports). Sandra is a caring, knowledgeable professional and is truly invested in ensuring a great experience for her clients. – Anna-Lisa Ciccocioppo

The Fifth Avenue Club’s Coulter Training is led by the owner, Rod Coulter, who began his fitness journey at the age of 13. At that young age, he learned to defend himself and live a healthy life.
That explains why his club has a growing family of fitness enthusiasts who want him to be their personal coach. Experience, plus his personality, is actually what drove people to him.
Aside from Rod, the place is also staffed with high-quality personal trainers, allowing them to be available at all times. However, to get the most out of it, you need to be a member of the club to have full access to its programs.
The bad news is that it’s definitely expensive, as most of their clients have stated. But what’s great about it is that you can have it personalized based on your fitness goals.
To dwell more about this matter, the place offers three types of memberships: personal membership, corporate membership, and mini membership. You can go corporate if you have employees under your wing – nonetheless, personal is the way to go.
The best part is the mini membership is complimentary. This week-long opportunity is a nice touch if you want a first-hand experience of what they offer.
Clients can also select from personal training packages and team fitness group sessions(there are also amenities such as locker rental and daily laundry services).
Likewise, all members are eligible for free personal training consultations, which can at least lower your expenses. They’re also available 24/7, making them accessible online any time of the day.

Makes working out fun
The equipment is top notch, with circuit, lots of free weights, lots of cardio machines and miscellaneous great things like battle ropes and bosu balls. Cleanliness is a mantra at 5th Avenue, which is excellent. We are now achieving our fitness goals with the help of one of the onstaff personal trainers who makes working out fun when we are with him, and challenges us on our personal workouts between sessions with him. 5th Avenue Club celebrated their 25 anniversary in 2021, and I wish them 25 more! This fitness center is a wonderful fixture in the Calgary downtown. – Nicole Luebke
Healthy environment
I’ve been a member of Fifth Ave Club since November 2018 and the only regret I have is not joining the club sooner! The staff is more like family and they truly take the time to get to know each of their members on a personal level. They’ve created an environment that encourages people to live a healthy lifestyle and mitigating any barriers. Fifth Ave. provides laundry service, personal training, and have a little cafe to provide you with the nutrients on your way in or out of the gym. – Nina Rehill

Trainer Kendra (Kendra Mahon) is not only a black belt Kung Fu professional but also an expert fitness trainer in Calgary. That’s why, when it comes to qualifications, she definitely brings it to the table.
In fact, she was named Canada’s Top Fitness Trainer and has been involved in fitness training and martial arts practice for over 17 years.
On top of that, she has worked as a personal trainer for a number of well-known celebrities, top executives, tech entrepreneurs, and, of course, regular people.
Clients can expect her to kickstart them into shape as a level nine kung fu professional. Success stories praised her for creating effective training plans that are tailored to their desired physical appearance and healthy lifestyle.
We believe that having a strong digital presence gives Trainer Kendra an advantage over her competitors. She has active social media accounts (you name it, she’s on it), but her website is currently for information digging only.
Nonetheless, she continues to provide online personal and fitness training, although it will be difficult for anyone (except her old clients) to contact her via phone inquiries. Now, this is how social media is a good thing – in this regard, at least.

Natefit’s mission is to assist their clients in realizing their full wellness potential. Hence, they provide personal training for services such as weight loss, strength training, and movement coaching.
In addition to these, they offer nutrition plans that are simple to follow.
They have highly experienced trainers who are always updated with the client’s journey. They have two staff members for that, which we find sufficient when compared to others that are run by only one trainer.
By the way, the two trainers charge rates differently, although the tiers and inclusions per package is the same. Well, the price difference is only $5 across all tiers, so we simply recommend that you see which trainer works best for you.
Clients who signed up for their services will also have access to their extensive personal training software. Obviously, this is a good thing because it includes a variety of tools and resources to assist them in staying on track and making progress.
The only issue we’ve heard about is that in-person training at Natefit can be a little cramped as their gym is small, although it gives off a private vibe. It’s a good thing that they provide online training via the NATEFIT app.
There, clients can get personalized workout plans and nutrition advice, as well as help and guidance on topics like stress management, sleep, and work-life balance. With such resources, we believe Natefit app is a far superior option.
