Animators and fans of animated films will be excited to know that the GIRAF 18 Festival of Independent Animation will be happening in Calgary this coming November 17-20!
GIRAF stands for Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival. It’s an event by Quickdraw Animation Society (QAS) that celebrates independent animation.
Incorporated in Calgary in 1984, QAS promotes the art of animation through different courses, workshops, and screenings.
The festival they’re holding presents different works of animation both locally and internationally. This annual festival aims to discover the most beautiful, innovative, and inventive animated films created by talented animators from around the world.
This year will be the Quickdraw Animation Society’s 18th festival. They’ll be moving back to in-cinema screenings at The Globe Cinema which can be found at 617 8 Ave SW, Calgary for November 17 to 19.
On November 20, the event venue will be at QAS Studios which you can find at 2011 10 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T3C 0K4, Canada.
For this year, they will be sharing over 60 short films and 4 features. They also have two workshops that you can join where you can learn about the art of stop motion and lighting.
There will also be hangouts and Q and A’s with the animators, so don’t miss your chance to be part of this event. You’ll have the chance to hear about the work and artistic process of artists like Evan DeRushie and Alla Gadassik.
This is also a great opportunity to connect with fellow animators and animation fans and be part of the community they have here in Calgary.
It’s an exciting month for fans of animation and animators in Calgary, for sure. You can start buying your tickets to the event here.
A festival pass costs around $65.19 per person. However, you can also opt to watch specific animated features or join specific events at around $11.42 per ticket.
