If you’re renting an apartment or condominium for the first time, here are some tips on questions you should ask your landlord.
Table of Contents
1. “What are the terms for payment?”
Of course, talking about finances is important. Renting is a huge responsibility and you have to make sure that you can pay off your rent every month.
Asking this will prevent you from shelling out more money that you should. Make sure to review the contract really well, especially the parts about the payment terms and the amount you have to pay every month.
Make sure that everything is in order and there are no discrepancies across documents.
Other questions to ask are the following:
- How often will rent increase and by approximately how much?
- What grace period is there for rent payment?
2. “What’s the living situation like?”
Before moving in, it’s important to ask some specific questions to your landlord about the living situation you’re going to expect.
Here are a few questions you can consider asking:
- Are pets allowed? If so, what are the rules regarding pets?
- What’s the guest policy?
- What furnishings and appliances are included?
3. “What responsibilities do I have as a tenant?”
If it’s not fully detailed in the lease, make sure to ask for the list of responsibilities you have to do as a tenant so expectations are set on both ends.
4. “How do I handle maintenance or repair requests?”
You have to ask how maintenance is done for your unit. You can ask where you put in requests for services such as gutter cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, drain services, mold removal, pest control, chimney cleaning, roof inspection, air duct cleaning, among others.
5. “Can I make changes to the apartment?”
Ask them about making changes such as painting on walls, installing furniture and decorations, satellite dishes, and other things. You can inquire about what’s not allowed in your place so you can be guided when making it your home.
Those are our tips for questions to ask your landlord. We hope we were able to help you in your search for your brand new home.
