Canadian folk musician John Wort Hannam will be having a show in Calgary on January 28 as part of his Alberta tour this 2023. He will perform live at Crescent Heights Community Hall (1101 – 2nd Street NW, Calgary).
You’ll hear music from his 2021 album “Long Haul” with songs like “Long Haul”, “Hurry Up Kid”, “Wonderful Things”, and “Beautiful Mess”.
“Long Haul” was actually nominated for three awards at the Canadian Folk Music Awards: Contemporary Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Solo Artist of the Year.
Fans of the artist will know that Hannam didn’t have a smooth start with his singing career. He quit his teaching job in 2001 and spent ten months going through his savings as he sat at his kitchen table writing his first ten songs.
These ten songs would become his first recording, “Pocket Full of Holes”, which was released in 2003.
Years later, he became a beloved musician, releasing a lot of good music where he got a JUNO nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Album of the Year, a Kerrville Texas New Folk win, and a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award.
Hannam has always been known for his great storytelling through his music. He includes themes like living in Western Canada and talks about the human experience in his songs.
He has been through a lot in recent years, like becoming a father, turning 50, experiencing depression, episodes of losing his singing voice, and so much more. These experiences really shaped his music.
For his January 28 show here in Calgary, Mallory Chipman will be opening for him. Chipman is an award-winning songwriter, singer, and producer.
She is versatile and known for different styles, such as jazz, folk, country, pop, rock, and even experimental music. You’ll surely get a treat hearing her perform!
