The last time I tried my hand at cooking Ukrainian food, I ended up covered in flour after a particularly messy pierogi-making session. My attempt at replicating a recipe I found online quickly devolved into a sticky, doughy disaster.
Needless to say, I realized I’d be better off just going out to eat.
That led me to find places where I could get those perfect pierogies—those savory, cheesy potato pockets—and that melt-in-your-mouth holubtsi (cabbage rolls).
After some research and more than a few orders, I found the true Ukrainian comfort food spots. Now, I’ll share them with you.

Ukrainian Fine Foods is where you go for a hearty Ukrainian meal or to stock up on frozen favorites like those pierogies you’ve been craving.
Whenever I order frozen cabbage rolls, I benefit from no extra delivery charges. The delivery is also prompt and arrives within the expected timeframe.
The beef and rice cabbage roll was flavorful and hearty. I appreciate that the cabbage was cooked perfectly.
The pierogies were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. This creates a delicious contrast that enhances the overall eating experience.
Beyond the delicious food, the service is friendly and efficient. I appreciate how the staff is eager to share their knowledge of Ukrainian culinary traditions.
Plus, the atmosphere is also cozy and inviting. If you enjoy a relaxed setting, this is the place.
However, the prices are slightly higher than other eateries. If you’re looking for affordable options, this may not be the best choice.

Fast forward several years and I’m in the area looking for a place to go for lunch then thought I got to see if this place is still here. Sure is! At Kalyna’s, I love that you can grab a quick bite at the deli or stock up on imported goods—truly the best of both worlds!
Their Google Docs form for online orders is efficient. I filled out my order online in advance, and the process was smooth.
However, the service was a bit slow. The wait time for my pickup order was longer than expected.
Regardless, I appreciate how they feature vivid pictures of everything on their menu. Besides that, I also love how generous the portion sizes are. It left me happily full but not overly stuffed.
Their vanilla-infused cottage cheese crepes are a must-try. Each bite is creamy and decadent.
The potato pancakes, paired with their homemade sour cream, are five-star for me. Made with grated potatoes and carrots, they offer a rich flavor and satisfyingly crispy texture.
Their selection of baked goods is also excellent. The honey cake and the poppy seed buns are soft and crumbly.

At Ukrainian Coffee House, while the menu isn’t extensive, I like that it’s thoughtfully curated with a focus on quality over quantity. This allows them to refine each item, maintaining a high standard.
The staff is welcoming. They take the time to offer helpful suggestions, especially if it’s your first time here.
Aside from that, their ordering system is straightforward. Plus, even on crowded days, the wait times are reasonable.
In terms of food, their vatrushka is a standout. It’s a sweet cheese pastry—creamy and rich, with a perfectly flaky crust.
Their fluffy, yeast-raised doughnuts were dusted generously with powdered sugar—a perfect combination of sweet and subtly savory.
The pirohy was good, too. However, it was a little too sweet for my personal preference.
But there’s a drawback: the prices are higher compared to other Ukrainian spots in the area. If you’re on a budget, this may not be the best option.

“Oh wow, first of all, what a pleasant surprise to see a Ukrainian restaurant in the heart of a Canadian city. Thank you to the owners for such amazing place, from art, exterior, interior, details, even tumblers. Most of all Борщ is (at least today was) very yummy! I’d add an option of garlic and dill to the bread and your yummy version of “salo”.

Ukrainian Bakery and Coffee Shop’s honey cake is one of the best I’ve ever had. It’s moist, perfectly spiced, and has just the right amount of sweetness.
I also enjoyed their Kyiv cake. The meringue is light and airy, while the buttercream is smooth and rich. It’s not overly sweet either, which is what I’m looking for.
Their Esterházy cake is a must-try. The hazelnut meringue is strong and nutty. Plus, the apricot buttercream adds a touch of sweetness.
As for their coffee, the drip coffee was simple and perfectly complemented the baked goods I ordered.
They also offer some delicious pierogies. The cabbage ones were particularly flavorful, with a nice balance of savory and tangy.
The only minor issue I had was with the seating. It’s a little cramped, and there aren’t many options.
