Thread Your Way to the Best Yarn Stores in Calgary for Creative Joy

Yarn Variety: I browsed through various stores and carefully checked out their selection of yarns. I focused on finding a wide range of fibers, weights, and textures—everything that matters when choosing yarn.

Friendly Staff: I prioritized stores with friendly and knowledgeable staff. I tested their ability to answer my questions about yarn types, suitable projects, and needles.

Community Vibe: I sought out stores that fostered a sense of community. Workshops, classes, and spaces where knitters and crocheters could connect were important factors in my search.

Location & Parking: I looked for stores that were easy to reach and offered plenty of parking. It had to be a hassle-free experience from start to finish.

I was ready to jump into a new hobby, so I went through Etsy for inspiration. That’s when I saw a rainbow of yarn colors that I couldn’t resist.

That’s exactly how I ended up with a package of “merino wool.”

But to my dismay, it looked more like a tumbleweed than a skein of yarn. It was tangled and matted that I could barely pull a strand out—let alone knit with it.

This experience, however, made me realize I needed a more reliable source of high-quality yarn. So, I began exploring the best yarn stores in Calgary.

Here are the ones that made it onto my list.

How much does it cost to buy yarn in Calgary?

It costs at least 5 CAD to buy yarn in Calgary. This is just an estimate. The actual cost depends on the type of yarn, the brand, and where you buy it.

Operating Hours:

What truly sets Ancient Arts apart for me is their meticulous hand-dyeing process. Each small batch of yarn ensures unique color variations and exceptional quality that you won’t simply find in mass-produced yarns.

The colors are beautifully designed, often drawing inspiration from nature and art. Their “Summer in Morocco” colorway is a great example of this thoughtful approach.

I also appreciate how the store’s walls are neatly lined with shelves filled with hand-dyed yarns. The variety is impressive, with fibers ranging from merino and cashmere to linen and silk.

They offer weights suitable for a wide range of projects, from delicate lace shawls to chunky blankets. Besides that, I appreciate their well-curated selection of needles, notions, and patterns.

Their classes are also top-notch. You can enroll in “Beginner’s Knitting” or “Advanced Sock Knitting” based on your experience level.

On top of that, their staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They’re always ready to offer advice and assistance.

However, one drawback is how busy the store can get at times. This makes browsing and locating items a bit more challenging.

Pros

  • High-quality hand-dyed process
  • Thoughtful colorways
  • Wide selection of fibers
  • Versatile yarn weights
  • Comprehensive crafting supplies
  • Top-notch classes
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Organized store layout

Cons

  • Busy store environment

Kind, welcoming, and helpful staff

“Visiting Ancient Arts was the highlight of my trip to Calgary. Dan (the owner’s husband) gave us a full tour of all the yarns, highlighting the fibre content of each base and the thought and stories behind them. I had no idea how thorough and conscientious Ancient Arts is regarding the mills and fibres they use. All of the staff were incredibly kind, welcoming and helpful. The yarns are organized by weight and then alphabetically, so it’s very easy to find colourways and see if certain colours are available on different bases. The shop is bright with lots of natural light, there is a ton of stock, and the yarns are very high quality. Colours are rich and beautiful.

I highly recommend a stop here! Set aside a couple of hours if you’re indecisive like me. The choices are endless and it’s so fun to peruse slowly!”

“What a delightful store!! I went in specifically for their Cherry Blossom Celebration and even though the store was PACKED, everyone was SUPER friendly! It’s a bit of a drive from Airdrie, but absolutely WORTH IT!!”

Little Bow Fibre Company has a bright and airy atmosphere that still feels intimate and welcoming. The layout is thoughtfully designed, making it easy to browse the extensive selection of yarns.

I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors of their in-house-dyed Brine Dyeworks yarns. The speckled colorways stand out for their uniqueness.

Beyond their own brand, they carry an impressive range of high-quality yarns from well-known brands. It includes Malabrigo and Manos del Uruguay, along with products from independent dyers.

The store also offers a good selection of needles and accessories. It’s a convenient place to pick up all your knitting essentials.

The staff was incredibly approachable and knowledgeable too. I especially appreciated their patience in calculating the yardage I needed for my project.

My only complaint is the limited parking space. This is especially challenging during peak afternoon hours.

  • Thoughtfully designed layout
  • Diverse range of brands
  • Unique in-house-dyed yarns
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Comprehensive selection of supplies

Cons

  • Limited parking

Lovely yarn and soft wool

“Lovely Yarn. Soft wool and luxurious feel. Michelle helped me to choose this yarn, WOOLSTOK worsted, BlueSKY  to knit a sweater to my son. Many thanks for your kindness and help.”

– Ulla Buchanan, Google Reviews

Prices are reasonable

“While not a knitter myself but the father of an aspiring young one, I can’t recommend Little Bow enough. The owner Michelle couldn’t have been more helpful and kind to my daughter. From helping choose the best (but not most expensive) yarn for the project she had in mind to recommending online resources for knitting skills, Michelle made my daughter feel welcome and not the least bit intimidated, despite being a beginner.

Support your local small businesses!”

The variety is extensive. They have the classic Cascade and Berroco for any project and luxurious indie-dyed yarns from places like Explorer Knits and Olann.

Plus, the staff is genuinely helpful. I appreciated their patience in helping me find the perfect yarn for my latest project.

I also admire the wide range of classes they offer, which cater to all skill levels. You can join their knitting, crocheting, colorwork, and even macramé classes.

On the downside, the needle section felt disorganized. With needles scattered around, it was challenging to locate the specific sizes I needed.

Aside from that, their pricing is higher compared to other stores in the area. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s a good idea to ask for a detailed breakdown before making a purchase.

Pros

  • Extensive yarn selection
  • Wide range of classes
  • Helpful staff

Cons

  • Disorganized needle section
  • Higher pricing

Patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging staff

“I recently took an amigurumi class here. What a fun experience. Zoe was patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging. I felt welcome from the moment I stepped in the store and was greeted warmly by several associates. The staff are willing to answer your questions and provide recommendations. Lors of yarn to choose from and probably the only place in Calgary that will make sure you have the same dye lots! I would highly recommend shopping here and taking a fun class.”

– Sara S, Google Reviews

Offers an extensive selection of brands

“The cutest yarn store, with an extensive selection. They have so many brands and it’s like a candy store. I’ve had the best time chatting with staff about patterns, weight, and they always know what needles to suggest. I just learned today they wind skeins, so I’m excited to book that service next time I go in. Plus I love supporting an independent woman owned business!”

Carries many great items

This is such a cute yarn store. I love it and we really needed one this far south. They carry so many great items. Beautiful local hand dyed, local pottery yarn bowls, buttons, and mugs. They have a nice small sitting area if you want to knit a little too. One of the owners was there and she was super nice and not pushy at all. She chatted while letting me shop as well. She was knowledgable about the yarns she carried and even other yarns she didntm. Super! I highly recommend this store. It is a place I will frequent as often as possible.”

– Kathy Doherty, Google Reviews

“Great selection, yarn, tools & service!! I bought a gift card for my daughter and it was stolen in her purse. At Gina Brown’s, it’s not just about the sheer volume of yarn—though the selection is truly impressive. It’s the quality that stands out.

I’ve found excellent merino wools that drape beautifully, silky yarns that shimmer with every stitch, and sturdy cotton that is ideal for those summer projects.

What I especially appreciate is the staff’s approachability. Whether you’re struggling with a tricky stitch pattern or unsure about fiber compatibility, they’re quick to offer helpful suggestions and reassuring advice.

However, one small downside is the layout. It can feel cramped and disorganized at times. It’s challenging to navigate, especially during busy periods.

Regardless of that, I love that their pricing is reasonable. If you’re working within a budget, you can still find high-quality yarn and tools without breaking the bank.

Pros

  • High-quality yarn selection
  • Approachable staff
  • Reasonable pricing

Cons

  • Cramped and disorganized layout

The best variety of wool and patterns

“I have been going to Gina Brown’s since her shop was on 4th Street (1970).

I was there today and it still has the best variety of wool, patterns, and samples. The 2 staff were very helpful and pleasant. Also knowledgeable and not pushy.

Wearing a mask is no problem. Thanks so much, I will continue enjoying going there!  Pamela.”

Great selection of yarns

“Love this lys!  Whenever I am in calgary I make sure to get there.  Great selection of yarns, in a variety of prices.  I love that they don’t just have the bougie yarns, but also a nice selection of acrylics.  I find  the sales people helpful and friendly.  I would love if they had a winding service,  Calgary is not my primary residence so my swift/winder is not here.  I would have bought some hanks today if they could have wound them for me!  All in all, my favourite  Calgary yarn shop!”
