Warning: The Best Pastries in Calgary from these 14 Shops Will Live in Your Head Rent-Free!

Have you ever had something so good that you just can’t keep it out of your head? For me, it’s pastries.

Now I know you think – hey, you can’t be that crazy over croissants! –  but when the taste and texture are just perfect, the right bread will really get you chronic cravings!

As someone who just loves a good donut or sourdough for breakfast or a light lunch, I have my fair share of faves. These are the only shops I keep coming back to, and all for different reasons. Some because I want a nice cookie – some because I need a custom cake.

If you want to see which pastry shops I’m crazy for, here they are!

1. Begonia Bakehouse

Website: https://begoniabakehouse.com/

Address: 1502 14 St SW

Contact details: +1 587-355-7768

Operating hours:  Wednesday – Saturday: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Sunday: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Price: $$

On my first visit to Begonia Bakehouse, I couldn’t resist trying the kouign-amann, and it did not disappoint. It has a delicious caramelized crust that gives way to a buttery center  – perfect if you don’t want something overly sweet.

For those who prefer savory options, their potato bacon Danish is one of the best. This pairs well with a cup of monogram coffee, as it doesn’t wash out the flavors with a strong caffeine aroma.

But while I have my own set of faves here, regulars say their almond croissant isn’t something to miss. It’s flaky, flavorful, and just the right choice if you want something light with your coffee.

By the way, Begonia has a rotating menu for baked goods, so there may be weeks when special flavors are out. You can stick to their signature best-sellers (like the ones I mentioned), or opt for whatever’s new on their shelves.

2. Pretty Sweet Bakeshop

Website: https://www.prettysweetco.com/

Address: 536 42 Ave SE

Contact details: +1 587-356-1225

Operating hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Sunday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Price: $$

Pretty Sweet Bakeshop is the place to go to if you ever need a custom cake for your event. With just a week’s notice, you can have them customize a dessert set for you, whether it’s for a wedding or a corporate shindig.

Apart from this, I also enjoyed using their online store to place orders. It’s easy to use, and items are available for either pick-up or delivery.

Plus, the prices are surprisingly reasonable for the quality and presentation of their goods.

And if you love options like me, I’m sure you’ll love their cookies and donuts that come in 15 different flavors. There are also shortbread bars, cupcakes, and brownies here, which you can order individually or by the dozen.

3. Manuel Latruwe

Website: https://www.manuellatruwe.com/

Address: 1333 1 St SE

Contact details: +1 403-261-1092

Operating hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Price: $$

Manuel Latruwe is best known for their butter-blessed viennoiseries that take inspiration from Belgian bread shops. They have over 20 bread options here, including their dreamy pain au chocolate that’s perfect with a cappuccino.

Apart from bread, they also have a wide range of cakes. Their “exotic” cake is gluten-free, with ingredients such as passion fruit mousse, mandarin compote, and mango syrup-soaked sponge.

For chocoholics, the black forest is nicely topped with marena cherries.

If you’re more of a DIY enthusiast, they have what they call a “We Make – You Bake” line. From frozen croissants and Belgian waffles to gourmet thin-crust pizzas, you can bake these treats fresh at home. And yes, the taste is the same as the ones they have in store.

4. Sucre Patisserie & Cafe

Website: https://www.sucrecafe.com/

Address: 1007 8 St SW

Contact details: +1 587-352-5505

Operating hours: Monday – Friday: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM | Saturday – Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $$

Sucre Patisserie & Café is one of the city’s best spots for French-inspired treats. Every pastry here is baked fresh daily, so the quality of goods is hard to beat.

While most patrons prefer their almond croissants, I actually love their sandwiches. They’re simple but filling enough to make for a quick lunch. You can easily pair one with a smooth latte or custom-sweetened London fog.

If you’re more into chewy food, they have cool mochi donuts (I tried the pistachio one when I was here—it was perfectly nutty!). But if you want something more “breakfast-like,” you may enjoy their delicious chocolate banana croissant.

Just take note that options like this may vary depending on availability. I recommend placing an order online first (via their site) to skip the in-store hassle.

5. Mari Bakeshop

Website: https://www.maribakeshop.ca/

Address: 103 St Matthew Square NE

Contact details: +1 403-214-0629

Operating hours: Wednesday – Sunday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Price: $$

If you have a thing for golden French choux pastries (guilty!), Mari Bakeshop is a must-visit. Here, these rates are filled with various sweet, fruity, and vanilla creams that just melt in your mouth.

My favorite has to be hazelnut choux, as the sweetness is just right. And because the taste is subtle, it can be easily paired with coffee or tea.

Their lemon meringue tart is the perfect choice if you want something sweeter, though it might be their coffee roll cake that’ll match better with their lattes.

You can go for either their sausage Danish or their quattro formaggi croissant for something more savory.

By the way, expect occasional line-ups, especially in the early mornings. Come early, as they don’t accept orders via their website.

6. Sidewalk Citizen Bakery

Website: https://www.sidewalkcitizenbakery.com/

Address: 618 Confluence Way SE

Contact details: +1 403-457-2245

Operating hours: Monday – Friday: 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM | Saturday – Sunday: 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Price: $$

Sidewalk Citizen Bakery in Calgary is a go-to spot for those who love a wide range of options.

At this shop, the sourdough croissant is the top favorite because of its crusty exterior and buttery texture that doesn’t overpower.

If you’re in the mood for something a little sweeter, their sticky buns are perfect. They’re made with soft brioche dough and generously covered in cinnamon. But if you want fruit-filled pastries, the sweet Danish here is your best bet.

What’s also nice about this place is that they have gluten-free options, including their blueberry crumble cake (this one’s only available from Friday through Sunday, though). But if you don’t have dietary restrictions, go all out with the pain au chocolate made with 54% dark chocolate.

7. Alforno Bakery & Cafe

Website: https://alforno.ca/

Address: 222 7 St SW

Contact details: +1 403-454-0308

Operating hours: Monday – Sunday: 7:30 AM – 9:00 PM

Fresh, hand-made pastries? Then Alforno Bakery & Cafe might just be your next favorite.

This shop sells a wide range of pastries from cakes to breads. They also offer services such as catering and private event bookings at their venue.

One of the best things to get here is their lemon meringue tart, which is perfect for those who love citrus desserts. But if you want to go for the classics, they also have an almond croissant with sweet almond filling.

For something more elevated, the carrot cake deserves a special mention. With its moist texture and rich cream cheese frosting, you can’t ask for more. This cake pairs wonderfully with their house-made lattes, as it doesn’t overpower the aroma.

8. Pie Junkie

Website: https://piejunkie.ca/

Address: 1081 2 Ave NW

Contact details: +1 403-287-8544

Operating hours: Monday – Sunday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Price: $$

At Pie Junkie, every pie is a work of art. Every piece is hand-made and slow-cooked in small batches. Their all-butter crusts are legendary for their flakiness and crispiness, which is what amazing pie is all about.

The butter chicken pie is one of their most popular savory options, and for good reason. This one combines tender chicken and a flavorful curry wrapped in an amazing crust. But the key lime pie won’t disappoint if you want something sweeter.

Another savory option worth mentioning is their Jamaican beef hand pie. It’s the kind of treat you can’t just have one of – trust me, you’ll want to buy extras. And I mean that by heart, as this one usually sells out the fastest!

9. Butter Block Bakery & Cafe

Website: https://butterblockyyc.com/

Address: 908 17 Ave SW suite 111

Contact details: Monday – Friday: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM | Saturday – Sunday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $$

For something a little different, you have to try Butter Block Bakery & Cafe’s pandan coconut pastry. Its unique flavor profile has a sweetly fragrant smell and well-balanced sweetness.

If you’re a little more adventurous, the pandan coconut mochi bread pudding here has an interesting texture. It has a crispy exterior, but the inside is soft and chewy. Grab one and see if you’ll fall in love with it!

As with most shops, their almond croissant also can’t be missed. Filled with a sweet almond paste, this pastry is everything you want in a croissant.

For drinks, I highly recommend trying their Paradigm Spark Coffee. This features unique brewed varieties like Bohuma, Sezita, and Duvix.

10. Glamorgan Bakery

Website: https://glamorganbakery.com/

Address: 3919 Richmond Rd SW #19

Contact details: +1 403-242-2800

Operating hours: Tuesday – Friday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM | Saturday: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $$

Glamorgan Bakery is a local favorite famous for its legendary cheese buns. If you’ve never tried them, grab a bag—or two—as they tend to sell out almost as soon as they open. You can even buy them frozen to bake fresh at home!

The cakes are truly next level, especially their custom creations. You can go for a half chocolate, half vanilla cake with cream cheese icing, or a stunning lemon cake with a buttercream finish.

Their donuts are another highlight. My favorite has to be the chocolate pudding-filled option and classic glazed.

And with the small-town vibe of the shop, it’s a nice piece to enjoy with a simple black coffee and have a casual chat with the locals.

11. Good Bread

Website: https://www.goodbreadonline.ca/

Address: 8303 Fairmount Dr SE

Contact details: +1 587-295-0887

Operating hours: Monday – Saturday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM | Sunday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $$

Have you ever heard of a jalapeño cheese bagel? Well then, just drop by Good Bread, and you’ll be treated to some of the most unique flavors you’ll see!

The bread here is on another level of fluffiness. For many regulars, the artisan grain and sourdough are personal favorites. Personally, I loved their cheese scrolls and spinach-and-cheese croissants, as they’re a nice break from the classic options.

If you want something creamy, though, check out their vanilla cruffin. But if you want a far more fruitier taste, the lemon blueberry scone has the perfect balance of tart and sweet.

For your visit, take note that you can actually drop here any time of the day. Even in the late hours, you can still score freshly made pastries. Quite nice, right?

12. Sweet Home Bakery

Website: https://sweethomebakerycalgary.com/

Address: 7930 Bowness Rd NW

Contact details: +1 403-288-5252

Operating hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $$

Sweet Home Bakery has been a Calgary staple for over 50 years, and their products are proof of why they’re a local fave. Their baked goods are always fresh and made in-house daily, giving them this homemade charm.

If you’re a cake lover, you’ll love their custom options. Their signature style is having a fluffy sponge cake with just enough sweet cream in a classic design. But, of course, the flavor and style are still up to you and your event.

The chocolate eclairs here are legendary and one of their most sought-after goods. Pair one with a flaky cherry turnover or an extra-rich leek and Parmesan Danish, and you have a full meal.

13. For Goodness Bake

Website: https://www.forgoodnessbake.ca/

Address: 7337 Macleod Trail SW Unit 232

Contact details: +1 587-333-7990

Operating hours: Monday – Sunday: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Price: $$

For Goodness Bake opened with a mission in mind: making plant-based eating easy, inclusive, and undeniably delicious. With 60% of their products also gluten-friendly, this bakery is perfect for anyone with dietary restrictions.

And since they exclusively feature local vendors from Alberta, every purchase supports small businesses in the community.

In line with that, the variety of parties here is unmatched, from savory pies to sweet treats. In particular, I couldn’t resist their carrot cake slice, which was perfectly moist and had a nice and rich frosting.

Their chocolate cookie sandwiches and blueberry crumble are also fan favorites if you want to try something other than the classics.

By the way, because of their unique setup (and some AHS regulations), there’s no available seating inside. I recommend placing orders on their website first and just coming over to pick up your order.

14. Yum Bakery

Media credit yumbakery.yyc

Website: https://yum-bakery.com/

Address: 510 77 Ave SE

Contact details: +1 403-668-6164

Operating hours: Thursday – Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $

Their selection of baked goods at Yum Bakery feels endless, but the standout for me was the carrot cake. It’s a unique twist on a classic, as theirs is loaded with raisins, coconut, and pineapple.

If that’s not enough yet, they’re also topped with a layer of icing sprinkled with pumpkin seeds and dried apricots.

They have freshly brewed coffee sourced locally from Calgary Heritage Roasting, so pair that with a cake, and you’re good to go!

If you’re in a rush, their online ordering ensures you won’t miss out on your favorites. And in case you have a hard time ordering, I recommend going for their butter croissants (we love a classic!) and their hazelnut praline macarons.
