9 Best Disc Golf Venues in Calgary for Both the Pros and the Newbies

I admit – I’m nowhere near Thomas Gilbert when it comes to disc golf. Canada’s top player has all the skills to win tournament after tournament each year.

Meanwhile, I’m happy as long as I don’t lose my disc in the bushes! But come on, disc golf is for everybody!

In fact, there are venues all over Calgary where both pros like Gilbert and newbies like me can play. Some of them even allow dogs in the area!

So, if you love the sport like I do, you might like my list. Note everything down and who knows, maybe you’ll find your favorite spot!

1. Baker Park Disc Golf Course

Address: 4320 Bow River Pathway

Operating hours: Monday – Friday: 5:00 AM – 11:00 PM

Price: Free

Good to know: Bring your own disc golf

Baker Park Disc Golf Course is a must-visit for anyone in Calgary looking for some fun, friendly competition in the great outdoors.

The best part? It’s free!

With 18 well-designed holes, it’s perfect for both first-timers and seasoned players eager for a challenge.

The course is beginner-friendly and offers multiple tee options to cater to different skill levels. Plus, each hole is clearly marked, so it’s easy to follow along.

If you’re unsure where to start, you can even find the layout online through OpenStreetMap or the Calgary disc golf community site.

Located in Baker Park, this area is also known for its welcoming community. So, while you enjoy your game, just make sure to respect everyone’s space while you’re there.

2. Thorncliffe Disc Golf Course

Website:https://calgarydiscgolf.com/

Address: 5600 Centre St N

Contact details: Monday – Sunday: Open 24 hrs

Price: $$

Good to know: Bring bug spray

Thorncliffe Disc Golf Course is a fun and engaging place to play, whether you’re looking to relax or challenge your skills.

The mix of open spaces and tree-filled areas keeps things interesting. However, you might want to keep an eye on your discs, as they can disappear into the bush!

The course offers a solid mix of both long and short holes, making it enjoyable for players with some experience. While beginners might find a few of the slopes and distances tricky, it’s still a great spot to practice and improve.

With only 9 holes, this one’s perfect for a quick game.

But, if you’re up for more, you can loop back for the alternate 9. Do note that the extra back 9 are a bit more technical, but they’re a nice variety for those wanting an extra challenge.

While the signage could use some improvements, it’s a small issue compared to the overall experience. Just remember to bring your own discs, and you’re set for a good time!

3. Edgemont Disc Golf Course

Operating hours: Monday – Sunday: 5:00 AM – 11:00 PM

Price: Free to play

Good to know: Quite noisy, has a nice diamond and soccer field

Edgemont Disc Golf Course is a great little course with 11 well-laid-out holes that offer a mix of fun challenges. It’s a fantastic place to practice your short throws, whether you’re a beginner or just looking to sharpen your skills.

What I love most is how they’ve integrated the course into the parkland, so it feels like you’re enjoying both nature and sports.

Plus, it’s free to play, making it a great spot for a casual day out. After all, who doesn’t love free open spaces?

The course is short but doesn’t skimp on variety. This keeps things interesting with a mix of open and tricky spots.

And since none of the courses are of high difficulty, absolute beginners can definitely try their hand here.

4. Forest Lawn Disc Golf Course

Address: 1502 14 Ave SE

Contact details: +1 607-651-4090

Price: Free

Good to know: No restroom available

Forest Lawn Disc Golf Course is a hidden gem that offers a fun challenge, especially with its 24 holes.

It may seem like a quick round, but don’t be fooled. Those 18 holes can take longer than expected!

The course has a good mix of open fields and a few technical spots to keep things interesting. That said, some of them may be enjoyable to experienced users only.

It’s recommended to download the UDisc app, as finding your way to the place can be tricky without it. Their disc golf catchers are very sturdy though, so that’s a nice plus.

Even if you’re not disc golfing, the park has plenty to offer, including picnic tables and walking paths. It’s a great spot for a leisurely day out, whether you want to play or just chill.

5. Country Hills Golf Club

Contact details: 1-403-226-7777

Operating hours: Monday – Friday: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Price: $$$

Good to know: Membership benefits and rewards

The course at Country Hills Golf Club offers two impressive 18-hole layouts, The Ridge and The Talon. Both are set against amazing views of the breathtaking parkland.

As players navigate the course, they’ll enjoy the stunning landscape with various trees dotting the terrain.

No matter what your skill level is, the layout makes it enjoyable. That said, it’s probably not as challenging for experienced players.

I loved how well-maintained everything was, making it a joy to walk around and soak in the surroundings. Plus, the staff made a big difference too as they were friendly and always ready to help.

6. Currie Reservoir DGC

Website: https://calgarydiscgolf.com/courses/

Contact details: [email protected]

Price: $$

Good to know: Strictly no dogs allowed

With beautiful scenery and challenging layouts, Currie Reservoir is the perfect place for both newcomers and seasoned pros looking to have some fun.

It offers two sets of tee pads: the tough yellow layout for advanced players and the green tees for a more manageable round.

As you navigate the course, be aware that the fairways can get pretty tight, so players might have to dodge a few stray discs flying by. Plus, this place tends to get busy, so staying alert is key if you want to avoid an unexpected frisbee to the face.

While beginners might find the out-of-bounds areas a bit tricky, it’s a nice addition for a challenge.

To navigate the course effectively, here’s an insider’s tip: the signs are somewhat outdated, so using the UDisc app will help you avoid ending up in the wrong spot. Plus, it will make finding the washrooms much easier!

Just take note that dogs aren’t allowed, so it’s best to keep your fur babies at home for this round.

7. Park96

Website: https://park96.com/

Address: 14660 Parkland Blvd SE

Contact details: +1 403-271-7516

Operating hours: Monday – Sunday: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Price: Free

Good to know: Not dog friendly

Park96 is a great spot for disc golf, especially since it hosts exciting events throughout the year. This includes the Disc Golf League, where Parkland residents can join tournaments from May to September, even if they are beginners.

Park 96’s 18-hole disc golf course has evolved over the years, offering variety in elevation and natural obstacles to keep the game exciting.

To enhance the experience further, the course features concrete tees and CBJ Turbo Funnels targets that create an even more fun challenge.

It’s also worth noting that the facilities are well-maintained, with playgrounds, picnic areas, and even a skating rink to keep everyone entertained. Just be sure to grab a map from the office before you start on the golf course so you don’t miss any great spots.

8. Lloyd Park Disc Golf Course

Website: https://udisc.com/courses/lloyd-park-XpWX

Operating hours: Park closes at 8 PM (Mar-Sep), 7 PM in Oct. and 5 PM (Nov-Feb)

Price: $

Good to know: Best with UDisc app

Lloyd Park Disc Golf Course offers both challenging and easier courses. Many shots are in the open around clusters of trees, which provide shapes that are just right for beginners.

The front 9 features clever use of trees, while the back 9 can be more challenging due to its length rather than its layout. I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners, but the beautiful course design will present the perfect challenge for seasoned players.

Here’s something to keep in mind if you want to play: during the summer, the tall grass off the fairway can make finding a stray disc tricky. Spring and fall, however, provide easier conditions.

Oh, and don’t forget to download the UDisc app so you can also test your max distance on several holes!

9. Bonavista Downs Community Disc Golf Course

Media credit peakdiscs

Address: Lake Huron Crescent SE

Operating hours: Monday – Sunday: Open 24 hrs

Price: Free

Good to know: No drinking water and restroom available

Bonavista Downs Community Disc Golf Course is a great spot with a nice new back 9 that features good tee pads for disc golf. Each basket has pointers for the next holes, making it easy to navigate this mostly open-field course.

While it can be a bit crisscrossed in places, this only adds to the fun while you’re playing. Take it from someone who has experienced it firsthand!

In addition to the exciting course design, it’s a wonderful place to hang out with friends and family. Whether you’re throwing discs or just enjoying a walk with your dog, you’ll have a great time.

Having 18 holes of disc golf to enjoy for free is definitely a win for those seeking a variety of challenges! Plus, it’s hard to beat the chance to play without any costs involved.
