I’ve always had confidence when it comes to tech—from troubleshooting glitches to helping friends fix computer viruses. It was only a matter of time before I tried my hand at building my own PC.
So, a few months ago, I walked into a computer store, ready to cross this one off my bucket list. Except I was met by staff who couldn’t tell apart a motherboard from a graphics card.
After they attempted to mislead me into purchasing incompatible components, I walked right out.
To help others like me who have wasted time in a less-than-stellar shop, I rallied up the rest of the Best Calgary team to help me find reliable computer shops in the city.
Here’s who made it onto our list of places where your next computer purchase can be what tech-savvy dreams are made of.
How much does it cost to shop at a computer store in Calgary?
It costs at least 100 CAD to shop at a computer store in Calgary for basic computer components (storage drives, etc). For a basic computer, expect to spend at least 300 CAD. The final cost will vary depending on the computer specs, brand, store and more.

Operating hours:
- Monday to Friday – 11 AM to 7 PM
- Saturday – 10 AM to 6 PM

Memory Express Computers is a solid spot for tech enthusiasts and DIY computer builders. They’ve got partnerships with Microsoft, Intel, and AMD.
Here’s the deal about their custom-built PCs: you pick your parts, and they’ll assemble everything for a reasonable fee.
The standard build starts at $75. Several people we spoke to who loaded up on high-end CPUs and GPUs had nothing but great things to say about the process.
If you’re looking for something a bit fancier, you get all the standard assembly perks plus some extra love for more complex setups for $100. This includes extras like RAID configurations or third-party coolers.
If you’re really looking to go all out, the Premium Plus option goes up to $150. It lets you get liquid cooling and RGB lights.
On top of that, Memory Express offers free CPU and motherboard installations when you buy both. They also provide a range of tech services like virus removal and data transfers, which are super handy.
However, a few people admitted they felt ignored or thought the staff seemed more interested in helping others than addressing their questions.
Informative recommendations
“Have been going to MemoryExpress for years for my computer and gaming needs, had a great experience with Rhett purchasing a new pre-built PC and decided it was finally time to leave a review. Always excellent service from every Calgary location I’ve been to, Rhett gave a great informed recommendation on a monitor to go with the new rig and after testing a few games I can definitely say he made the right call (was originally planning on going with a 32″ curved monitor, he suggested a 40″ ultrawide at a similar price). The pictures don’t do it justice but it’s an absolute dream to game on!
Will always recommend MemEx!”

Customer service was absolutely amazing
“My husband and I stopped by the other day, and Sia was the one who helped us. I honestly don’t know much about computers, but she explained everything so clearly and answered all of our questions without making it feel overwhelming. We actually didn’t plan on buying anything that day, we were just there to get a quote, but by the time we left, we had a brand new computer for my husband! He was so excited, like a kid with a new toy, and it made me so happy to see him like that. Sia’s customer service was absolutely amazing. Coming from someone who works in hospitality, I was really impressed. Thank you, Sia 😊”

Operating hours: Monday to Saturday – 10 AM to 5 PM
Computer Rack has two decades of serving up everything from business systems to gaming rigs. The variety here is staggering!
As we browsed through the aisles, there were all-in-one systems everywhere we looked. There were also some gaming laptops and rackmount servers.
In terms of accessories, they have everything from USB docks to laptop chargers and cooling fans. We couldn’t resist picking up a laptop privacy screen and a couple of cables for our setups.
They even have a solid selection of pre-owned systems for those who want to save a few bucks but still get decent hardware.
Several people we interviewed couldn’t stop raving about the unbeatable prices. Honestly, this might just be your new favourite spot if you’re a techie on a budget.
When it came to customer service, the staff were genuinely knowledgeable and ready to help. We observed staff members assisting several customers with laptop issues—no pushy sales tactics, just honest advice.
Plus, they offer curbside pickup. It’s a nice touch for those who want to minimise their time in-store.
Just a heads up though: payment must be made in advance for curbside pickup. In fact, several people we interviewed stayed away from curbside because they were required to pay before they could even inspect their products beforehand.
Purchased two refurbished desktops which are performing almost like new
“Joel has become my go to guy for all my computer needs and fixes. I recently had major issues with a desktop and a laptop and Joel breathed new life into both almost while I waited and at a very fair price. In addition I purchased two refurbished desktops which are performing almost like new and also at a fair price. Joel is a jewel for all your computer needs.”

Decent price
“I recently went back to Computer Rack after my first visit 3yrs ago. A friend needed his laptop checked out, as it was giving him a black screen. So I went with. Anyway, once again Jo proved himself to be patient, educated my friend, and resolved the issue in less than 20 minutes, at a super decent price. Great service, honest and definitely reasonable. Thank you!”

Very knowledgeable and helpful
“A friend of mine recommended uniway computers, and im so glad they did. I dealt with Chen getting myself a new gaming pc. He was very knowledgeable and helpful with giving me a hand picking the right build. Not only did he give the best service, but he also threw in a little gift as well. 10/10 recommend uniway. I’ll be back soon to get some upgrades”

They walked me through everything
“I was looking for a budget friendly PC and stumbled across Uniway on Facebook Market. I was scared to be scammed, but they were quick to get back to my messages. I went in to buy the PC but it was sold 10mins before I walked in. I was super sad, but then the worker said he had the exact same build just a different case. I was so excited and relieved. They walked me through everything and provided the boxes for the parts. I’m so happy with my PC! The prices are unbeatable. Highly recommend! Note they only sell prebuilt PC’s not stand alone parts.”
