Cost of Tutoring in Calgary
The cost of tutoring services in Calgary is determined by a variety of factors, including the setup (online or in-person, group or individual) and the tutor’s experience. The table below provides an overview of the typical cost of hiring a tutor in Calgary.
You should be aware that some companies provide hourly payment plans, while others provide weekly packages and monthly subscription packages.
How We Chose the Best Tutoring Centers in Calgary
Let’s start with the factors we used to pick our entries.
1. A&D Tutoring
Credibility | 4/5 |
Quality education | 5/5 |
Teaching style | 5/5 |
Affordability | 3/5 |
A&D Tutoring is an award-winning organization established in 1992 and has since become a reputable tutoring center. Their services are offered not only in Calgary but also Edmonton and Red Deer.
What makes them different from the others is their capacity to teach basically any age. In fact, they mentor students aged 5 to 70 – something made possible with the center staff’s 200 years of collective teaching experience.
However, we can’t tell for sure what their subject expertise is among their offerings. There are a lot of teachers on the roster, but their hiring focus doesn’t seem to be on getting experts for just one subject.
That said, they seem to be most sought-after for their K-12 subjects as well as their education programs for adults.
Regardless of expertise, the center tailors a learning plan to their student’s specific educational needs. Of course, this is what standard one-on-one tutoring should be.
Another thing we like about them is that their tutoring services are easily accessible to everyone, including those living outside of Alberta. They are available for one-on-one or group sessions both virtually and in person.
You should be aware, however, that A&D received minor negative feedback in our customer surveys regarding customer service (answering inquiries and enrolling process). That said, what matters more, in our opinion, is the quality of education they provide.
Pros
- Available for learners of all ages
- Individualized study approach
- Personalized study plans
- In-person and online tutoring services
- Degree-holder teachers
Cons
- Weekend services are by appointment only
Amazing staff, highly recommended
I highly recommended A&D Tutoring, where I recently completed my GED, as well as Computers levels 1, 2 and advanced. 5 STARS! is truly not enough to give this company – I wish I could give more stars. The staff all the way throughout A&D from the secretaries to the teachers are TRULY AMAZING! – Joe Rucchin
Really good experience
Wasn’t sure what to expect but the the experience was really good. The staff are friendly and helpful and the exam spaces are quiet, clean, and private. Would definitely recommend if you need an exam proctored. – Corey Smith
2. My Tutor Calgary
Credibility | 4/5 |
Quality education | 5/5 |
Teaching style | 5/5 |
Affordability | 4/5 |
When it comes to tutoring services for kids, we always look for fundamental subjects such as math and science. Fortunately, the core subjects are among My Tutor’s specialties alongside other subject expertise including, language arts, and social studies.
The fact that this center also provides post-secondary, technical, and language development courses is a plus in our book. This, in our opinion, makes them a comprehensive learning center accessible to learners of various learning aptitudes.
But our favorite part about My Tutor goes beyond more than just academics. Using their smart-matching process, students get assigned to a tutor that matches their learning styles, current needs, and goals.
About that, they pair the learners with tutors (which they call “mentutor”) based on their personality, learning style, and grade level. This allows them to prioritize the appropriate academic tools, motivation, and support to maximize each student’s learning experience.
My Tutor operates on a one-on-one basis, providing kids with a focus on learning at a comfortable pace. Plus, they have flexible tutoring, offering all of their programs online – they even have a free 30-minute online session.
Finally, we appreciate that this center is upfront about its pricing. And, despite being quite expensive, they redeemed themselves with their package that can be perfectly tailored to each of the students at their free assessment.
Pros
- K-12 tutoring and post-secondary courses
- Smart-matching tool to assign students to tutors
- Customized tutoring packages available
- Upfront pricing
- Online and in-person tutoring available
- Free assessment
- Occasional deals offered

As well, the tutors interact very well with the students and understand them. – Harji Minhas

3. Sylvan Learning of SW Calgary
Credibility | 4/5 |
Quality education | 5/5 |
Teaching style | 5/5 |
Affordability | 4/5 |
As modern-day parents, we believe a personal approach won’t suffice in today’s learning demands. That’s why we loved Sylvan Learning and the interactive technology they use to
teach kids how to learn, read, and write.
With a bit of tech, it keeps things far more exciting for the learners – plus it keeps the kids engaged. It’s important to capture their attention while offering new and interesting things to prevent learning plateaus.
Sylvan achieves this by employing the research-based Sylvan Method, which combines adaptive learning technology and curriculum with its personalized teaching approach.
Having said that, it just makes sense for them to have a quality teaching approach with the wide range of tutoring services they provide. They have basic and advanced subject tutoring in grades K-12, as well as coaching for advancement and test preparation.
Plus, Sylvan seems like an engaging and fun tutoring center, especially considering the other exciting stuff they offer. For instance, they also hold camps, summer camps, and workshops, which also help improve their learners’ social skills and offer enrichment.
In our interviews, many parents noticed early signs of improvement in their children’s reading and literacy during the first few weeks of tutoring at Sylvan. Parents can be viciously honest about services they’ve paid for when it comes to their kids, so we feel confident trusting their word in this regard.
They also praised the center for helping students develop academic and social confidence. Honestly, stuff like this comes as a natural byproduct of tutoring anyway, particularly if the child is learning with a group.
As if all of this weren’t enough, Sylvan also impressed us with their special offers, which include a free week of tutoring through referral and a free consultation. Given how expensive their services are, we believe this is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of them.
Pros
- Specializes in reading and writing tutorial services
- Personal approach with interactive technology
- Engaging and fun learning center
- Many additional activities to develop social skills
- Able to deliver academic improvements in just a few weeks
- Has special offers
Cons
- Can be a bit pricey
Impressive, great improvement
As English is not our mother tongue in my family. I would like my kids to learn the speaking and writing skill same as the local students. I was so impressed my elder daughter has a great improvement since last October. By the time, my younger son also joined Sylvan SW recently. I have no doubt to recommend this tuition center to all my friends. – Tse Derek
Engaging and useful lessons
Sylvan learning is a very thoughtful and accommodating place. who puts a lot of thought into how present the material. Aurora lessons were engaging, useful, Rebecca was very patient with everyone in class always encouraging his/her students to try. I would highly recommend sylvan learning to anyone interested in learning or busting there skills. – Hollie Popovics

6. Cambridge Learning Services Inc.
Credibility | 3/5 |
Quality education | 4/5 |
Teaching style | 5/5 |
Affordability | 5/5 |
Cambridge Learning Services made our list due to their affordable tutoring services, which are easily among the lowest we found. In addition to their free 30-minute consultation, they can be hired for an hour of tutoring for as little as $15!
Such tutoring, however, is under their group tutoring sessions – your child will be joined by three other students in these. If your child learns best with peers around them, we see that this low-cost learning session is ideal for them.
Their two-hour one-on-one tutoring session at $90 appears to be reasonable as well, though, making this center still cost-effective if you want one-on-one sessions. Also, it’s led by experienced tutors, which is why it’s pretty good-value.
Now, when it comes to the tutoring services they provide, they’re excellent for general subject tutoring for students in elementary school up to high school. Though we’ve heard that they specifically prioritize math and English.
For higher grades, Cambridge Learning can still keep up with their game. To give you a quick overview, junior and senior high school students can expect to learn literacy performance and independent writing,
The center also teaches complex mathematical concepts like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
We’re only concerned about their availability because they operate primarily in the afternoon and evening, which can be a difficult time for some children to learn. That said, it just makes sense, as kids are obviously mostly free after class.
Pros
- Cost-effective tutorial services
- Free 30-minute consultation
- Specifically prioritizes math and English
- One-on-one tutoring available
- Experienced tutors
- Online booking available
- Availability is ideal for after-school sessions
Cons
- Availability can be inconvenient at times

7. David Krebes Math Tutoring
Credibility | 5/5 |
Quality education | 4/5 |
Teaching style | 5/5 |
Affordability | 3/5 |
Here’s another Calgary tutoring center that specializes in math – David Krebes Math Tutoring. It’s run by David himself, who is a math PhD, giving the center good credibility off the bat.
If it’s only about experience, they’d easily win the title of the best math tutoring center or tutor thanks to David. He’s taught all levels of math to high school and post-secondary students, including both struggling learners and gifted students who require a greater push of their knowledge.
It would be a huge plus for us if a math tutor could deliver the lessons in a gentle and patient manner, which David, as it turns out, excels at. He pushes his students to their limits just right, without forgetting to deliver the gist of the topic.
He usually starts each topic with expository material and then creates a set of notes with homework, which he can grade if the student requests it. He does this instead of attempting to force them to get a good grade in one sitting.
When teaching a difficult subject like math, we always look for a comprehensive approach. For David, it’s through presenting his tutees with a series of challenges after covering a specific topic, something we confidently approve of.
As busy as he is, we appreciate that he can be scheduled for tutoring anytime, every day – though he can’t be booked for an immediate session. But the best thing about this tutor, besides the service, is that the first visit can be free of charge should students not find it fulfilling.
Pros
- Specializes in tutoring all levels of math
- Run by a math PhD
- Can cater to struggling learners
- Gentle and patient manner
- Comprehensive and realistic approach
- First visit can be free of charge
- Flexibility schedule
Cons
- Can often be hard on challenges
- Can’t be booked for an immediate session

Gives clients reports after session. One on one sessions he does. He was able to help my son with his math and boost his confidence. His prices are reasonable and he has his PHD. It shines through that David enjoys his work. – Andrea Goodwin
Will see to it that you understand
Beginning Math 11 was scary and overwhelming. With all the content to cover I was nervous about understanding it all and progressing. I looked for help and was lucky to have found Mr. Krebes tutoring service. Each session he writes up notes on what was done in a way catered to how one learns. I have now finished Math 11 with his help and received higher grades than I thought myself capable of. Whether needing help for high school Math, elementary, or university, Mr. Krebes will see to it that you understand the material well! Can definitely recommend to anyone and looking forward to Math 12 with him! – Victor Carpay

9. Excel Tutoring
Credibility | 3/5 |
Quality education | 4/5 |
Teaching style | 3/5 |
Affordability | 4/5 |
Isn’t it frustrating when our schedules don’t coincide with those of our chosen tutoring center? As it happens, Excel Tutoring is flexible in accommodating their clients’ hectic schedules, something that’s also a plus for us parents.
They’re always available to work on their calendar, whether it’s an extra session before an exam, a session rescheduling, or the like. They even made it possible for us to fit an interview into their busy schedule, which made a great first impression on us.
We’ve gathered that they do more than just the usual tutoring. Instead of solely focusing on just instructing the students, they supplement each session with teaching materials – practice exams and worksheets, review notes – to elevate the learning experience.
If you already know us, you know how important it is for us that a tutoring center provides tutoring in the core subjects. Excel Tutoring, does so with its expertise in math, English, reading, and writing subjects.
As most of the best tutoring centers in Calgary are best known for their one-on-one sessions, we like that it’s the other way around for this center. That’s why they see them as a good fit for learners that thrive more in group settings.
This tutoring setting at Excel Tutoring goes beyond what we would expect, with tutors tweaking their lesson plans with group discussions and even engaging students in debate. In our opinion, this keeps learning fun and interesting.
The only thing the center lacks is probaby experience as a unified tutoring establishment, as it was only established in 2017. However, we remain confident in them, especially given how well they are received by the public, as evidenced by their excellent overall service rating.
Pros
- Flexible scheduling
- Tutors core subjects
- Supplements each session with teaching materials
- Excels in group tutoring session
- Free consultation
- No hidden fees
- In-person and online tutoring
Cons
- Established recently in 2017
- No sessions on weekends
Tutors connect so well, excellent service
Excel tutoring is absolutely wonderful. We started using their tutoring services (Owen and Dhwani) about 5 months ago and it has made a huge difference for both my kids (ages 15 and 17). Both tutors connect so well on a personal level and my kids grades have gone up – both are excellent teachers. Highly recommend – I am so glad I found your company! – Nicole Zander
Pleasing progress, reasonably priced
Excel Tutoring is a great local tutoring company. I am very pleased with the progress my son has made with their tutors. Reasonably priced for the quality of tutoring received. We have tried 3 different tutors (for English, Math and Sciences), and all are very knowledgable and friendly. Also very flexible and accommodating with schedule changes. Honest company. Thank you – Hot Milk
10. Learning Solutions
Credibility | 4/5 |
Quality education | 3/5 |
Teaching style | 4/5 |
Affordability | 3/5 |
Tutoring services must also be reliable in supporting their students outside the session, and that’s Learning Solutions’ strongest point. They earned a spot on our list for prioritizing the overall success of their tutees.
We like that they don’t force learning within a specific timeframe. For instance, they don’t force the materials on their students in a single session – instead, they assign homework so that they can work on their learning outside of class.
The learning environment piqued our interest, in a positive way, as we see them as a good choice for onsite tutoring. Aside from having a nice space for tutoring sessions, every teacher at the facility is very approachable, even for students they don’t handle.
That’s an important point for us to emphasize, and we believe other tutoring centers in Calgary should take note of it. After all, shouldn’t tutoring centers foster strong student-teacher relationships?
Given that they’ve been in the field of education for over 20 years, it’s not surprising that they’re familiar with proper tutoring methods. Not to mention that they’re well-versed in the curriculum (even aligned with the school curriculum), making them expert tutors.
The problem is that their tutoring method can get out of hand at times with the assignments they provide, we think. So, if your goal in hiring a tutor is to have your child guided every step of the way, Learning Solution may not be the best fit.
Pros
- Over 20 years in the field of education
- Doesn’t force the materials in one session
- Good onsite learning environment
- Fosters strong student-teacher relationships
- Provides homework and assignments
- Aligned with the school curriculum
Cons
- Can be harsh at giving homework at times
- Non-working website as of writing

Overall this has been a really good place for me to come and study and work with good tutors who simplify my learning process. – Ad Man
Trustable tutoring, professional skills
It is a great place for my kid to love studying. It is affordable and trustable tutoring center that I’ve ever seen in Calgary. My kid has every week homework parallel with his school homeworks. They have professional skills and good experience with kids that amazed me. – Niloufar Khoshroo
