You’d think making a good cup of hot chocolate would be easy, right? Think again. I’ve had my fair share of hot chocolate disasters—watery, chalky, and tastes so bland I started questioning if I’d lost my taste buds altogether.
And don’t even get me started on that time I ordered a “peppermint twist.” It tasted like someone had poured a bottle of peppermint extract straight into my cup. Not a vibe.
Determined to find a hot cocoa worth sipping, I’ve taste-tested my way through the city. From fluffy marshmallows to bold Mayan spices, these are my top picks.

Master Chocolat serves up hot chocolate that really hits the spot. They offer two options—milk chocolate and dark chocolate—both made with high-quality ingredients that’s something I always appreciate.
The milk chocolate was smooth and creamy, with a really nice balance of sweetness. It’s the kind of hot chocolate that reminds you of your childhood.
The dark chocolate, though, was the standout for me. It was bold and let the cocoa flavor shine without being overly sweet. I’m not usually a dark chocolate fan, but I really enjoyed this one.
I also had a few sips of the salted caramel flavor, and it was good. Sweet, salty, and satisfying—definitely worth a try.
My only gripe? The toppings. They only offer whipped cream and some basic sprinkles. I was hoping for a little more variety like marshmallows or chocolate shavings to take things up a notch.

The Chocolate Lab is a fun, one-of-a-kind experience. They have an actual hot chocolate bar with taps flowing with melted chocolate.
You can choose between dark and milk chocolate. I loved being able to mix the two to control the sweetness and intensity. It felt like customizing my own perfect cup.
Their seasonal flavors are definitely worth a try. If you’re there in the fall, don’t skip the pumpkin spice. It’s like drinking a slice of pumpkin pie with chocolate whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Their hot chocolate bombs are also a highlight. These hollow chocolate spheres are filled with hot chocolate powder and marshmallows, ideal for taking home. Just pour hot milk over them—instant happiness.
The staff made the experience even better. They were friendly and even gave me tips on their boxed chocolates, which I appreciated.
The only thing I didn’t love was the additional fee for toppings, especially since they weren’t even worth it.

You’ve got to try Choklat’s hot chocolate—it’s on another level. They used the entire cocoa bean, which gave a layered flavor that’s unlike anything else I’ve had.
I also love how many options they offer. You can even grab their drinking mixes online for a fix at home.
This time, I went with their Autumn Breeze—a modern-day Mayan hot chocolate. The spices really stood out, with warm notes of cinnamon and nutmeg and a touch of chili for a kick.
They also have flavors worth checking out like Chokuccino. It’s a chocolate-espresso combo that’s so good. Their Orient Express blends Asian spices that I heard great things about, so it’s on my list for next time.
The whole vibe at Choklat is great too—modern, relaxed, and just a little hip. Plus, the staff were super friendly and more than happy to walk me through their menu.
If there’s one downside, it’s the price. It’s a bit steeper than other spots, so it might not be the best value for what you’re getting.
Really good hot chocolate
“Choklat is a niche market vendor. Their chocolate is very good. They have truffles with no preservatives, so you have to eat them quickly. It would be nice to have classic chocolates as well, but that may require more machines. The star of the show is their hot chocolate made with the entirety of the cocoa bean. It’s so rich that you will understand why Central American Indigenous people used it in religious ceremonies. I always bring a bag or two with me when I visit friends in the UK. They rave about it.”

The tastiest hot chocolate ever
“Had a private tour of Choklat with my friend Pam. Started with drinking chocolate that was so thick your spoon could stand up in it! And it was definitely the most amazing hot chocolate I have ever had!!! And then we toured the entire facility, learning all about cocao beans and how they are grown and harvested roasted and used to make Choklat! We got to taste cacao nibs (the really good quality ones!) After the tour we got to sample all the different kinds that they make from the different cocao beans.
If you are looking for something to do and LOVE chocolate – GO!
I couldn’t leave without making a small purchase 😃
Thank-you Pam for inviting me along! Wish I had taken more pics!”

I was really impressed with the quality of the chocolate at Epiphanie Chocolate. They source it from some of the top chocolate makers in the world. You can really tell they’re serious about the ingredients.
The shop itself also has a sophisticated and elegant vibe. The staff were fantastic, too. They helped walk me through the options and pick the right hot chocolate.
I ended up going with their classic milk chocolate, and it tasted so good. It’s creamy, smooth, and not overly sweet—it felt like a true indulgence.
However, the price is definitely on the higher side. If you’re looking to splurge, it’s worth it. But if you’re on a budget, you might want to save this spot for a special occasion.
Smooth, rich and creamy chocolate
“After searching I finally found a place that I will definitely return to for some hot chocolate! I have been craving real hot chocolate, and was delighted to find when I drank this it is smooth, rich and creamy chocolate! This adorable little store is so welcoming to walk inside and feels like a “ma and pop” shop. They sell their own handmade chocolates (some pictured) which are as good as they look!”

Friendly and accommodating staff
“Epiphanie Chocolate is probably by far the best chocolate shop in Calgary. The chocolates are deliciously decadent, the hot chocolate is amazing and the coffee is hot and fresh. John, the owner is incredibly friendly and accommodating and you feel wonderful after you’ve visited. I would highly recommend Epiphanie Chocolate if you’re looking for a gift or if you want a treat for yourself.”

Black Sheep Pâtisserie has a charming, cozy vibe. The moment I walked in, I could smell the fresh pastries baking in the back. Of course, I had to grab a few to take home!
While they’re best known for their pastries, their hot chocolate is truly special. You can really taste the quality of the French chocolate they use—rich, thick, and bittersweet.
Apart from that, I love that they don’t add any additives—just pure chocolate goodness topped with whipped cream.
The only thing that bothered me was the tables—they weren’t cleaned properly. I had to ask them to wipe mine again, which was a bit annoying.
Real good hot chocolate

Decadent and thick hot chocolate
“Hot chocolate was decadent, thick, & very chocolatey (i.e., well worth the price!). Croissants were incredible – buttery, flaky, & nicely filled with tasty homemade jam. You can taste the love in the quality here! (5/5)”
