Tell you a secret: I’m one of the types who wanted to get into sports but never quite had the social vibe for it. I know, it seems pretty antithetical: most sports are team-based efforts, and here I am wanting to just practice on my own?

So that crossed stuff like basketball and baseball off my list, but you know what it didn’t? Golf! You just need clubs, golf balls, a good golf course, and you’re set. It’s the perfect sport to play either alone or with friends!

I’ve finally managed to get friends to try it, and the good news is that most of them enjoyed it enough to want to improve.

Unfortunately, I’m not a teacher. So in the interest of getting better, we did a round trip of golf coaches here in Calgary to find the best spots!

How much will it cost to get a golf coach in Calgary?

Getting a golf coach in Calgary to run you through lessons can cost you anywhere from $90 to 500 a lesson, depending on any assessments needed before lessons, equipment used, and the length of the lesson.

If you’ve ever looked into golf at all here in Calgary, there’s a chance you’ve already run into 365 Golf. The spot got pretty popular among golfers old and new in the area, so with that kind of reception from the locals, we couldn’t resist dropping by.

Right off the bat, we were pretty stoked on our visit. There was ample training space for those looking to practice their swings, and we also noticed the presence of several varied courses to host actual games.

It didn’t stop there either, as there were also plenty of amenities available! The waiting and break areas were comfortable, with beverages and snacks. There was even a TV in the room, so you can save yourself a trip to the sports bar after.

As for the quality of their lessons, we got to chat with a few learners at the site. Many were pretty happy with the coaching from the team, especially for those looking to correct and better their form when swinging.

That being said, we’d definitely recommend having a budget in mind and trying a trial lesson before committing here. The costs for their lessons were on the higher side when we checked.

Pros

  • Plenty of amenities for learners
  • Ample training space and varied courses
  • Good lessons for practicing form

Cons

  • Higher cost for lessons

Immediately spotted my main issue and gave me the tools

“I first met Josh at the PGA Golf Show in March, and in just a quick 15-minute lesson, he immediately spotted my main issue and gave me the tools to start fixing my swing. Because of that, I booked a four-lesson package where we continued to work.”

– Ms. Kirstin Barchard, Google Review

Taking lessons with Tyler has dramatically improved my game

“Taking lessons with Tyler has dramatically improved my game and reducing my handicap from a 23 to a 15. All the staff is welcoming and encouraging. Great selection of beverages, lots of tv for watching other sports and top notch courses available.”

Like any sport out there, golf can be hard to learn without having an idea of where to improve. That can be a challenging ask for beginners, but we’ve got these new golfers to thank for recommending Kyle Miller Golf Inc. as a good starting coaching service!

The first thing to catch our eye was their practice areas. Golf is played on various dedicated courses, so we were pleased to see the team having facilities and lessons on both outdoor and indoor courses.

On our visit, we also got to ask a few regulars what drew them to the service. A highlight was the personalized lesson plans, taking into account comfort and skill levels to help improve learners’ game at their own pace.

We were also surprised when customers mentioned the coaches giving them access to various study and practice resources. These could come in the form of basic handbooks to full practice videos to help guide learners.

Kyle Miller Golf Inc. also provided both private and semi-private lessons, though regulars mentioned there being comparatively limited slots for the latter. We’d definitely try to book ahead of time if you’re planning on taking lessons with a friend or two.

Pros

  • Ample study and practice resources
  • Indoor and outdoor golf practice areas available
  • Personalized lesson plans

Cons

  • Difficulty obtaining slots for semi-private lessons

Perfect combo to build both skill and confidence

“I’ve only been taking lessons with Kyle for a short time, but I’ve already seen fast improvements in my swing! We’ve been doing a mix of driving range and par 3 work, and it’s been a perfect combo to build both skill and confidence.”

Did you know you can also practice golf for fitness? We were pretty surprised too, until locals pointed us to Dynamic Motion Golf Performance. Needless to say, we were pretty intrigued by this and couldn’t resist swinging by to see the fuss for ourselves!

We were pretty surprised by what we found. As their name implies, the service had quite a number of programs and lessons dedicated to golf fitness, helping golfers work on their own health and train their bodies for a better swing and game!

Learners we got to chat with also mentioned the consultations and movement assessments during lessons, helping coaches and learners alike gauge what to improve in their form and what they should avoid straining during training.

We also learned that the team regularly conducts workshops and specialty programs focused on golf techniques, so we see this as a good entry point for newcomers to explore their coaching.

On the other hand, regulars of the service were advised to try to check their class availability and schedule regularly. Some mentioned it can be pretty difficult to get class slots to try the lessons.

Pros

  • Reliable lessons and programs for golf fitness
  • In-depth movement assessments and consultations
  • Regular workshops and specialty programs

Cons

  • Difficulty reserving class slots

Taught me different stretches to use the proper muscles

“I was recovering from a back injury so Shannon took me through a movement assessment. She was able to pinpoint why my body was giving me trouble and taught me different stretches to use the proper muscles instead of my low back.”

– Ms. Barb Hrushka, Google Review

Definitely helped my body and my golf game

“I have been doing the stretch classes for a couple of months now and it has definitely helped my body and my golf game. I just feel so much looser after the classes, it’s incredible. The practice area is amazing and the GC Quad simulator is the very best.”

A hurdle for learners in picking up golf can be the price point. Good clubs can be pretty up there in terms of cost, but with many fewer lessons. Fortunately, Calgary locals were more than happy to recommend Modern Golf as a newcomer-friendly spot!

One of the first things we immediately noticed was the pricing for their lessons! We found their lesson packages pretty reasonably priced, especially with the number of lessons, simulator bays, and coaching that learners get access to.

The training space itself was also pretty comfortable from what we saw on our visit! There were ample break areas and equipment, so learners can practice on their own or with a semi-private group.

Speaking of equipment, we also got to check out the golfing equipment available to learners and were pleased with what we saw. Their clubs were durable, and there was a fitting available on-site to find the right one for each learner.

However, a few learners we chatted with recommended keeping in touch with the team on the lesson schedules. Some reported that some of their lessons were getting rescheduled or delayed on short notice, making scheduling tricky.

Pros

  • Good quality of equipment available on-site
  • Wide and comfortable training space
  • Budget-friendly costs for lessons

Cons

  • Lessons may get rescheduled on short notice

Productive without ever feeling overwhelming

“I found Rob to be an excellent teacher – every lesson I took was productive without ever feeling overwhelming. He tailored my lessons to my skill level and I have come away with some very positive tips which have helped me improve my score.”

– Ms. Donna Suik, Google Review

I’m glad I went for the fitting process

“The fitting was very thorough and in depth. I took close to 300 shots. I ended up getting clubs that I’m reasonably certain will work great for me. I’m glad I went for the fitting process vs. just rolling the dice on clubs.”

There’s a lot going into picking golf equipment. The handling, durability, and fit of the club can affect your performance, so we were pretty pleased to hear GOLFTEC come up as a local spot for newcomers trying to learn golf and how to pick their equipment!

On our visit, what immediately caught our eye was the training space and equipment. GOLFTEC had quite the selection of simulator bays to help learners practice their swings. These were pretty up-to-date as well, with displays for correcting their forms.

Learners we got to chat with also praised the team’s recommendations and advice. They had on-site fitting services, and most learners were happy with the equipment recommended by their coaches.

Their lesson plans garnered praise as well, with each package going over various golf techniques. These were reportedly pretty in-depth and helped learners practice both off and on-course, with progress tracking and ample assessments.

That being said, we did notice their lessons having a pretty long commitment time, starting from the initial swing evaluation to the lessons proper. We’d definitely recommend observing or taking a trial lesson first before committing to the courses.

Pros

  • Well-maintained and up-to-date simulators
  • Reliable long-term lesson plans
  • Good equipment recommendations from staff

Cons

  • Long minimum commitment time to lessons

“Have pushed through my 10-pack of lessons. Couldn’t be more pleased with my progress. Eric Lemire was outstanding to work with. Great instructor. Helped me with new clubs as well.”
